Strongroom took on new opposition Dropped Kratches with a strangely cobbled together team of core players and a clutch of new ‘oldies’ from various contacts. Amongst these was Ted Walters, who had captained Strongroom for a couple of seasons a good two decades ago! On losing the toss Strongroom were asked to bat first, and Newkirk [56] and Woolhouse [27] again bonded well in posting a sound half-century opening partnership. The opening bowling was steady but unthreatening, until the introduction of Matt Pollard who got the ball in the right areas consistently. Three quick wickets however and Strongroom were about 100-3 and in need of some consolidation, in recognition of a weakened batting line up and only 10 players. Myself [54*] and Ted [23] posted 80 for the 4th wicket and succeeded in getting Strongroom over the Highgate Wood-par 180 mark. Ted whirled the bat around with aplomb, and benefitted from several dropped catches that afflicted the opposition throughout our innings. Tea: 8/10, excellent homemade sandwiches from Marty Newkirk. Strongroom gave bowling opportunities to veteran ‘new boys’ Oliver Croom-Johnson, Vince and Luigi, who all responded well with good lines and wickets. Chris West also bowled a lovely spell of left-arm spin, and generally we fielded well and were always in control of affairs.
