I lost a crucial toss, and Caribbean Mix took advantage of batting first – to the tune of 260-8. It didn’t help matter that the oppo appeared an hour late and continued to slow the game down throughout at every opportunity, meaning the innings was completed at around 5:30pm. However, we fielded very poorly, and were punished on what was probably the best batting surface and outfield I have seen at Highgate Wood for many years. We felt we had Tareeq [79] out several times, but the Mix unpires felt otherwise, but it was veteran Tony’s brash innings of 50 that really did for us. Jerome made his first outing on a cricket pitch for five years, and bowled very reasonably considering, but in truth all the bowlers struggled with a quick outfield and belligerent batting.
Tea: The traditional Gowers’ jerk chicken went down very well.
Chasing 260 was never going to be easy. The first five Strongmen all made good starts, but none of us were quite able to ‘go on’ and threaten the target. Martin and Jimmy made a very brisk start, but the delayed tea break changed the texture of their partnership, as the lively Jay and nagging Johno started to make inroads. Jerome [49] showed us what we had been missing over the past few seasons in an accomplished and stylish knock, but he lacked partners and the wheels of our ‘run-chase’ finally came off with four balls remaining. Again, the game was slowed down by the Mix, and the constant interruptions and various controversies made for what was a generally unenjoyable experience.
