A trip to Toddington Manor is always a highlight of the season, and it was with some confidence that we tracked our way up the M1 with a strong XI to take on Gardeners once again. Winning the toss and batting first added to our confidence, and sure enough, Marty Newkirk and Tom Henderson provided a brilliant and fluent display of batting that added 154 for the 3rd wicket. Both batsmen displayed excellent shot selection, Tom playing with more circumspection, and Marty taking more risks in taking on the short ball from de Jesus. There was a mini collapse after their successive dismissals, but Will Davies and Dave Gower shored up the middle order, leaving us at a huge final total of 248-5, by some way our highest ever total at Toddington.
Tea: Two of the Gardeners were keen to get out their portable gas BBQ and burn up some meat. We were treated to a festival of various meat products, including one very large curly sausage.
Gardeners clearly had to come at us hard in their run chase, but Ujjal and Tom Higginson both maintained their composure, and chipped away with vital early wickets. With the cheap dismissals of danger men Richard and de Jesus, Strongroom were always in control, and though Nisbett and Ginai also added decent runs, the final result was never in doubt. It is never easy batting second, let alone chasing down a large total, and with good bowling from our attack, in particular Jerome Armit and Rich Woolhouse, this kept up the pressure throughout.
This was a fine all round win, albeit a bit of an anti-climax as a game.
