Stand-in Skipper J Gower decided to bat first on a firm looking surface. However Strongroom were soon in trouble at 16-2, with both Som and Jerome back in the hutch. J Gower and Rich Woolhouse then steadied the ship with a stand of 54. Whilst Gower struggled with his timing, Rich was troubled with a damaged calf muscle, but like a limping Gordon Greenidge this gave him licence to trade purely in boundaries, and he helped himself to his tenth Strongroom half-century.
Debutant James Claro helped shore up the middle order with an excellent 39, including some deftly timed boundaries, and just when the innings seemed to falter, David Proctor strode in and banged out a Klusener-esque 30 runs. Proctor was given fine support by Pete, Jerome and Guy, and together this wagging tail saw Strongroom post a commanding total of 206 all out.
An excellent lunch was rapidly consumed, and the two teams again set out for the second half. The fiery pace of Jerome and the waspish medium-pace of Proctor opened up the attack for Strongroom. Jerome was in a vengeful mood after his duck, and he more than made amends with an unbroken spell of 11-3-27-4. Proctor and Gower went wicketless, but Som snared a brace of wickets with some tidy medium pace, and Bully and Jolyon mopped up the tail with a wicket apiece. Fulmer were dismissed for 87, but it was Jerome’s bowling that broke the back of their innings.
All in all a very enjoyable game in the Bucks countryside, and we hope to make this fixture again for 2006.
