Ultimately this was a hugely disappointing defeat. Our plans were initially to nullify the threat of Cowley (who has brushed our top order aside twice before), build a platform and accelerate in the last 10 overs. Oh and to bat second! Losing the toss after heavy overnight rain was the first thing to work against us.
However, our plan to negate Cowley largely worked, as Dave Gower and Mike Gabbay saw off the first 15 overs. Runs were hard to come by (Mike’s 7 off 49 balls, Dave’s 18 off 54), but it was essential work that avoided our previous collapses against this same opposition. Things seemed to be going well as Sumer (36) and Tom Wolfendale (35) got us up to 125-3 in the 32nd over, and we were perfectly positioned to accelerate us towards 180+. However, both batsmen were dismissed in quick succession, and the rest of us struggled with Tim Schneider’s fizzy off-spin (5-29). We broke for tea with a disappointing total of 151, still with 5 overs to spare.
Mike Gabbay struck quickly, and this raised our hopes of claiming early wickets. However, man-of-the-day Tim Schneider (49*) had other ideas, and he and his brother James (38) effectively steered Gaities towards a comfortable victory. We bowled quite well, but the wicket was playing somewhat easier in the later afternoon, and we were ultimately 30 + runs shy of a truly competitive total.
