Strongroom once again rocked up at Harberton on a hazey early June evening, to herald the start of our Devon tour.
Stunning views of South Devon and Dartmoor provided a fantastic backdrop as Will and Joe set out to open the innings. Joe went on to compile a steady 28, featuring some nice timing, but also moments of struggling to time the ball on a slow surface. Mitch came and went, but compiled a breezy and stylish 23, including some sweet timing on the leg-side. I had thought Joe was scoring too slowly at times, but then when my turn came I realised it wasn’t as easy as it appeared from the pavillion. I too struggled to time the ball (27*), and eventually we were somewhat disappointed with a modest total of 116 off our 20 overs. Larder and Waller both got the ball to swing prodigiously, and Waller achieved some appreciable turn.
Harberton got off to a bad start, as Schneider sneaked one through the defences of Gornall, and interrupted his stumps. Skipper Jake Skuse looked very composed, and put on a decent partnership with Shearer. However, wickets fell at regular enough intervals to leave Harberton just behind the chase. Ian Hutchcroft (23) timed the ball beautifully, in particular one scything cover-drive for sped to the boundary, and along with Trigger (13), gave Strongroom some cause for concern as they edged closer to our total. With their dismissal, however, the chase ended rather quietly, and Strongroom again bathed in victory!
A lovely early summer evening this, and we all ended up in the Church House Inn, where we celebrated with the opposition and an assortment of locals, quite late into the night.
