Always a pleasure to turn up at Lustleigh. I think DP won the toss. Anyway, we batted first and within a few overs we were all weirdly entertained at the sight of Rich Woolhouse being repeatedly rapped on the fingers by the opening bowler from one end. Rich got quite grumpy, and carried out a much-celebrated ‘double-stamp’ as he jumped up and down as he winced in pain at another rap on his fingers. Dave P (26) played nicely, but then we lost a few wickets, and it was left to Jules (38) to play the most sprightly knock of our innings, including some sweetly struck 6s. Rahman (51*) played another mature innings, and together with Jon G (27) gotus to what we assumed would be a winning total - having never lost here in five visits.
Yet another superb tea, featuring a wide range of favourites, across a range of genres - pastries, devonshire scones with cream and jam, mini-sausages, sandwiches, fruit etc.
Asif and Grant took two quick wickets, and as with previous visits to Lustleigh, there was a sense of victory already in the air. However, Lustleigh were fielding a stronger XI than we had seen before, and sure enough, three batsmen between them produced fine innings took them past our total with ease - much to our surprise. M.Wright (80) in particular played a really good innings and was very solid in his game. Asif was again the pick of our bowlers in terms of control. We fielded fairly poorly, and overall fully deserved our defeat! With hindsight, we should have scored an extra 50 runs - but we just did not fully appreciate how much stronger the oppo were this time. Anyway, as with Harberton the previous day, it made our annual contest more interesting, and we already look forwards to 2016. We spent the evening in The Cleave, and the campers endured a cold, cloudless night on the outfield.
