This was our first post-covid-19-lockdown match at Highgate Wood. Protocols featured a 2-metre running line wide of the stumps, and a closed scorers shed. However, the weather forecast was dismal, heavy rain predicted all afternoon. If covid-19 didn’t get you, the British weather would.
DP lost the toss and Millwall Stars chose to bat first on a decent looking surface. Dave Gower (3-2) opened up, and immediately settled into a familiar away-swing groove, somewhat surprisingly so given several months of lockdown lethargy. He was soon among the wickets, as Millwall struggled to contend with the moving ball. At the shed end Otto was unlucky to go wicketless, and had some toe-bending yorkers turned down for LBW. After 15 overs Millwall were 55-5, and really struggling to impose themselves. Mario (2-15) again impressed with a probing left-arm line, straightening some and letting others swing across the batsmen. There were a couple of breaks for showers, and finally a partnership emerged as patient opening bat Kumar (20*) and Das (32) found a formula that worked. Das in particular flourished with a rasping square cut, and they were just threatening to create something significant when Ayon tempted Das into nicking an away-swinger into the obliging gloves of The Gush. Millwall moved to 105-6 before another rain break proved to be our last, as heavy rain set in and consigned us to abandon a nicely poised game.
