We had only eight players as three of our side did not arrive in time to bat – two of them never made it to the game at all. The toss was lost and we were invited to bat first on a freshly laid artificial surface at Wray Crescent. Those familiar with the ground’s dimensions will be aware that games at the Crescent are usually a six-fest. Today, however, Pacific’s pacy opening bowlers and a collective failure of shot selection and run-calling meant our wickets tumbled like autumn leaves. Some stubborn and swashbuckling resistance was offered by Arun (12) and Sohail (40) but our eight-man batting order collapsed to 73-7 all out. Sohail did hit some massive sixes though. Refreshed by an early tea and a passing shower, we began the defence of our meagre total in slightly better shape than our batting innings. One of our number arrived late and Nilesh’s young son Kevin stepped in to bring us up to ten fielders. Despite Kevin’s relentlessly good-natured sledging, Pacific were never blown off course. Sohail completed a decent personal day out by claiming the only wicket to fall, as opener Chasseaud (30*) anchored Pacific home. It was all wrapped up by 2pm. There was little appetite for a beer match so instead we decamped to the W.B. Yeats and enjoyed a much more satisfying afternoon of beer and cards. A match to forget.
