Tour costs
Match fees
We have to pay ground fees to play each match at the Gahanga National Stadium, and costs vary across formats and pitch types, and also include food, drink and umpires. We have opted for four grass pitch games, three artificial pitch games, four T20s and three ODIs. Total projected costs for all the games comes to £3,448.7. The more tourists we have, the less this cost is per tourist. For example:
£3,448.7 / 13 tourists = £265.2 per person
£3,448.7 / 12 tourists = £287.4 per person
£3,448.7 / 11 tourists = £313.5 per person
£3,448.7 / 10 tourists = £344.8 per person
We have been asked to split this fee into two instalments. The table below gives an update on this. If the number of tourists changes, the payments below will be recalculated to reflect this.
Tour bus We have hired a tour bus and driver who will be ours for every day of the tour. The total cost for eight days (Feb 22-29) comes to £502.7 in total. We have to pay half this after 3-4 days. With a touring party of 11, this will come to £45.7 per player, for example.
Payment of tour costs status
Additional costs Personal food and drink.
Opposition
We are arranging fixtures with Cricket Builds Hope, who run the Gahanga National Stadium. We also have the services of national player Clinton Rubagumya, who played for Strongroom on our tour of Nepal in 2018.
Kit
Bring as much as you can, and it's also a good opportunity to donate any old kit to some Rwandan cricketers at the end of the tour.
Strip
We can simply wear our whites. Be sure to bring both spikes and non-spike trainers, as we are playing on both grass and artificial surfaces.
Visa
There seem to be two options:
Option 1: 30-day single-entry holiday visas are available for 50USD. This site gives some details: Rwanda High Commission. And this site has the online application form: IREMBO Option 2: 21-day visa that costs £25 and you pay for and collect at the airport on arrival. If interested, you can contact the embassy on 020 7224 9832, 9am-1pm. This might be worth a try, but may also result in some faffing around at Kigali airport on arrival. Mohmed has gone for this option.
Health
Regarding jabs and inoculations, please check online and with your local GP. Be sure to do it in good time, as you may need some treatments some time in advance. Malaria tablets do seem to be recommended, but best to check with a health centre.
We will also get advice on hospitals in Kigali, as cricket can generate injuries.
Ebola is present in neighbouring Congo, but the border has been closed for a while. Ebola is not present in Rwanda, and the current status seems stable.
Umuganda
You may have noticed, we have Umuganda down on our itinerary for our last morning, on Saturday Feb 29th. Umuganda is the nationwide clean-up that takes place on the last Saturday of every month. It has been suggested that it would go down very well if we showed some commitment to this public activity. It is very much a post-genocide demonstration of national unity. I am awaiting further details from our contacts as to where our's will take place (eg at the cricket stadium is most likely).
Tourism
Some of you may want to see more of Rwanda either before or after the tour. Here are some recommended sights: https://www.lonelyplanet.com/rwanda/attractions/a/poi-sig/355553 Jon G visited Mt.Bisoke and Gisenyi (aka Rubavu) in 2018, both of which were good experiences. Tim Moore is interested in doing some trekking.
Plastic bags
Please note that it is illegal to carry plastic bags into Rwanda, or to use them in the country. Littering is also not tolerated (you will notice it is a very tidy country).
Miscellany
Please contact JG if there is anything else you need to know.
Gahanga National Stadium
All our matches will take place at the only cricket ground - the Gahanga National Stadium on the outskirts of Kigali. It's a lovely place, and the pitch and outfield are top class.
